چکیده

In Saudi Arabia, fossil-fuel is the main source of energy (100% in power generation sector for example) and it is increasing year by year in this country. Due to the huge growth and development in the infrastructure and also investment in the energy sector, the electricity consumption in Saudi Arabia has been increased and will continue to increase at a very fast rate. At the moment more than half a million barrels of oil is used directly for power generation every day. In this study, we assess the power generation situation of the country and its current and future conditions through a modeling approach. Then we will carry on a sensibility analysis so as to briefly evaluate an optimal, realistic and efficient way of electricity production by taking into account the integration of the other alternative (non-fossil based) resources such as solar and nuclear into the power generation means of the country. At the end, the impact of the power generation optimization on the economy of the country (import/export, financial gain/lost, political benefits...) will be analyzed. Firstly we present the current situation by detailing the costs of current and future generation park of electricity. In a second step, we present the model, its paradigm and the results of the baseline scenario considered. Finally, we develop the results of different scenarios that will allow us to conclude and bring new elements for reflection. Recall that the model aims to find an economic optimum under certain constraints. The model does not account most externalities that are difficult to be quantified.

Optimal Short-Term Coordination of Desalination, Hydro and Thermal Units

The fossil fuels consumption is rapidly growing due to increased water and electricity demands. An interconnected water-energy nexus is generally composed of thermal power plants, combined potable water and power (CWP) generation units, and desalination only processes. Hence, participation of hydro power plants in electricity generation facilities not only reduces the total fuel consumption of ...

Saudi Arabia’s Aggressive Oil Policy against Iran (2011-2016)

Iran and Saudi Arabia have long been engaged in heated rivalry and conflict in the Middle East. These two regional powers are both major oil-exporting countries; in major foreign policy issues, therefore, oil is used as an important tool to pursue goals. Iran and Saudi Arabia have a long history of differences on oil policies, but one of the most severe differences emerged in 2011-2016, along w...

Day-ahead economic dispatch of coupled desalinated water and power grids with participation of compressed air energy storages

Nowadays, water and electricity are closely interdependent essential sources in human life that affect socio-economic growth and prosperity. In other words, electricity is a fundamental source to supply a seawater desalination process, while fresh water is used for cooling this power plant. Therefore, mutual vulnerability of water treatment and power generation systems is growing because of inc...

Reliability Assessment of Power Generation Systems in Presence of Wind Farms Using Fuzzy Logic Method

A wind farm is a collection of wind turbines built in an area to provide electricity. Wind power is a renewable energy resource and an alternative to non-renewable fossil fuels. In this paper impact of wind farms in power system reliability is investigate and a new procedure for reliability assessment of wind farms in HL1 level is proposed. In proposed procedure, application of Fuzzy – Markov f...

Oil Subsidies and Renewable Energy in Saudi Arabia: A General Equilibrium Approach

In 2016, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) announced its Vision 2030 strategic plan incorporating major changes to the economic structure of the country, in cluding an intention to deploy 9.5 GW of renewable energy in an effort to reduce the penetration of oil in the electricity generation system. This paper assesses the macroeconomic impact of such changes in the KSA, coupled with reductions ...
